The Exotic Wildlife of Ladakh

The biting cold breezes from the snowy peaks of the Himalayas and the scenic mountains with sparse vegetation is what we think first when we imagine Ladakh. With sparse vegetation and the mercury dipping below the freezing point, wildlife there might have to survive the most challenging climatic conditions, but nevertheless does it mean there isn’t much wildlife in Ladakh.  The exotic wildlife of Ladakh comprises the Lynx, Chim, Tahr, Urial, Ibex, wild Yak, Nyan, Bucks and Chiru. The wild horse or Kyang, the musk deer and the snow leopard make up the family of rare animals of Ladakh. However, tourists are not permitted to the areas where some of the animals like the wild yak, nyan, kyang, lynx and chim reside. Those are restricted zones.

Ladakh is known for its placid blue water bodies. The blue lakes of Ladakh are home to several exotic species of birds like Turkoman rock pigeons, chukor, Bactrian magpies, desert wheat eaters, finches, black necked cranes and bar headed geese. One of the best places to experience the rich and diverse wildlife of Ladakh is the Hemis High Altitude National Park. Located at an altitude of 3,500 to 6,900 metres, the Park sprawls 600 sq km on the banks of the Indus River. It also encloses the catchment areas of Rumbak, Markha and Sumdah streams. The forest is dominated by alpine scrublands and grasslands and offers a great scope to view the snow leopard, ibex, snow partridge, kiang, serow and golden oriole. May to October stands to be the ideal time for Ladakh travel if is the wildlife you want to experience.

If you are fond of fairs and festivals, then June to September is one of the best times for Ladakh Travel. Sindhu Darshan Festival is one of the most colorful festivals of Ladakh. Celebrated on the day of Guru Purnima, which is a full moon day, this June festival draws a big crowd of travellers from different parts of the world. Ladakh Sindhu Darshan festival is a three days celebration. The festival is iconic of the unity of the nation and communal harmony. It endorses the Sindhu River, which is otherwise more popularly known as the Indus River. This Ladakh festival is the symbolic salutation to the valor of the martyrs of India, who as soldiers endangered their priceless lives to save the country.

The first time this Ladakh festival was organized was way back in 1997. While the celebration is held in the banks of the mighty Sindhu River, it is a good opportunity for the travellers to come and be a part of the celebrations here and do a trip of Leh and Ladakh. This beautiful festival of Ladakh is held every year in Shey Manla, a place distanced 8 km from Leh.
River Sindhu has its origin in Tibet’s Mansarovar and this particular Ladakh festival is all about witnessing the vastness of this great river and offering gratitude and prayers to it. The Sindhu Darshan festival takes off with Sindhu Yatra, a journey that’s regarded a holy pilgrimage. The festival is inaugurated by the Ladakhi Buddhists.
